Despite the horrible weather reports we had a a fair number of racers participate in this years Bogey and Bacall. It was an overcast day but the high winds and rain held out for the entire Bogey race. We managed to present the awards but were unable to finish the prize ceremony with the squall line reaching our shores. According to the weather radar the front line should pass quick enough just in time for our beach party. Miraculously the weather cooperated. High winds and cooler air swept through but we managed to continue on with a great party by utilizing the event tents and tiki hut. It was a great time! Although we managed to pull off the Bogey with great success we still had to deal with the Bacall with 20+ knot winds and dropping temperatures in the forecast. It didn't look good at all. But once again luck was with us as the grey morning skies turned blue and the sun began to take the chill off the air. By race start the bay calmed to a light chop and progressively turned to smooth waters for a perfect Florida race day! A new record for the Bacall was set by Jeff Smoke who is a US Olympic Paddler (see Jeff's bio). Jeff paddled a K1 with a time of 00:44:39. This years course was set as a two lap 6 mile course. Congratulations! We also managed to raise $1,105.00 for the Children's Shelter through the kayak and canoe raffle. Thanks to everyone for supporting us in our efforts. Winner of the Cobra Eliminator is L Farrell of Key Largo. The Indian River Canoe was won by Key Largo resident Meredith Cline! Once again all of us had a great time. Thanks for coming! If you attended this years paddling event, please take the time to help us by filling out the Florida Keys Paddling Festival Survey. Thanks! |
