SPECIAL ACA KAYAK CLASSES

Join FBO for instructional ACA training this fall. Bob Foote and Karen Knight will be our  workshop instructors again this year to teach the ACA workshops listed below. Bob and Karen travel widely throughout the US, Canada, and Europe teaching classes and attending paddling events. Between them, they can teach canoeing at any level on flat (including freestyle) or whitewater, tandem or solo, and sea kayaking for beginners through advanced. Both are ACA Instructor Trainers in canoeing and coastal kayaking and are certified to teach ACA Instructor Development Workshops and Certification classes at any level.

The scheduled class for the new American Canoe Association Instructor Development Workshop / Instructor Certification Exam are designed to prepare paddlers who someday may wish to become a certified Paddling Instructor. It is also a fantastic course for those who want to build their confidence, efficiency, and safety out on the water. This course would be a bit much for the absolute beginner but if you have taken previous classes with us or another outfitter than we would recommend going for it. You couldn't ask for better instructors. Bob and Karen are celebrities in the paddling world.

November 15th & 16th classes:

Kayaking - Balance, Edging and Bracing: Saturday 9:30 – 12:30 Karen Knight and Bob Foote are known for their balance and for the ability to really get their boat on edge, both in a kayak and canoe - flatwater and whitewater. Good posture and dynamic alignment are essential to having good balance and the ability to put your boat on edge (heeling). In this class students will work on balance drills, learn how to put their boat on edge, incorporate boat tilt into their strokes and maneuvers for better boat performance and develop bracing techniques to help give support and to recover balance. You will leave this class more confident, comfortable and connected to your boat. Come prepared to get wet. $55 or $75 w/boat and gear

Kayak Rolling : Saturday 1:30 – 4:30 This clinic is designed to introduce paddlers to the technique of kayak rolling, including proper boat fit and adjustment for effective rolling, body conditioning and preparation, safe and effective wet exit technique, the bow rescue, developing an effective hip snap, proper body positioning & head placement. Depending upon the characteristics of the group, the C to C roll, Sweep Roll and/or Extended Paddle Sweep Roll will be taught. For more advanced rolls refer to the Basic Greenland /Traditional Kayaking Workshop. $55 or $75 w/boat and gear

Costal Kayak Strokes and Maneuvers Refinement  Sunday 9:30 – 12:30 In this course, students will work on moving from basic competence to kayaking with finesse and efficiency. Students will explore the subtleties of boat control and stroke refinement, so that their body, boat, and paddle may work as one in a fluid and efficient manner.

Assisted and Solo Capsize Recoveries: Sunday 1:30 – 4:30  Water is dynamic. In a blink of an eye, it can change from being a placid, inviting, and relaxing environment to one that is unfamiliar, unpredictable, and threatening. Don’t wait for the unexpected capsize to happen before you learn the necessary skills to take care of yourself and others. In this class, students will learn rescue procedures and solo and/or assisted capsize recovery techniques that utilize the tools at hand: the kayak, paddle, PFD, safety equipment, and most importantly, their minds. This class is available at varying skill levels. $55 or $75 w/boat and gear

Yoga for Kayakers: Saturday & Sunday @ 8 a.m. You don't have to stand on your head or sit like a pretzel to enjoy the benefits of practicing yoga. Yoga, which means the union of the body, mind and spirit, is a wonderful tool for everybody, especially paddlers.  In this introductory workshop, students will be lead through a series of warm-ups, postures (asanas) and breathing techniques (pranayama) that are beneficial to kayakers. If practiced regularly, yoga can enhance body awareness, strength, flexibility, balance, posture and grace. In addition the breathing exercises will work to help calm the mind and improve concentration.  All of which, will help to improve your kayaking so that you can be one with the water, go with the flow and remain calm even when the water is anything but. $10
